Flour Power
No, it's not low-grade cocaine. It's two spoonfuls of whole wheat flour.
The one on the right is fancy-grade organic stone-ground flour from Bob's Red Mill and cost me $6.99 for a 2.26 kg bag. I will use it to make delicious things like pizza dough and my favourite zucchini bread.
The one on the left is cheap No Frills brand flour that cost about $3.99 for a 2.5 kg bag. It appears that No Frills' idea of whole wheat is mixing white flour with flakes of bran. Some of the flakes of bran are so big that I actually got a piece stuck in my throat when I was eating those oatmeal cookies I made last week. It literally looks like grit that has been swept up off the floor of an industrial mill.
I feel this comparison accurately represents the contrast between various Parliament Street grocery facilities, specifically the ones near Carlton Street between Cabbagetown and Regent Park. You can buy cheap staples that are mostly comprised of recycled cardboard with the people from the projects, or you can walk two stores down and shell out for artisan food that's been handcrafted by Mennonites with all the folks in their million-dollar homes. It makes me nostalgic for my days back in the suburbs when you could get things like President's Choice products. I haven't seen a Decadent Chocolate Chip Cookie in eons...
