Hanging Out on Saturday Night with 15-year-olds at Denny's

Wow, so was that Denny's All-Nighter Warped Tour afterparty ever the worst assignment in history! I mean, not that I thought that hanging out on a Saturday Night with teenagers and crappy pop punk bands in Mississauga was going to be cool, but the sheer ridiculousness of it all made a pretty fun article to write for this weekend's edition of the Post's Toronto magazine. Check it out in print or online.
The whole situation was pretty nostalgic since I did hang out at the local Denny's back when I was a suburban teenager. I'm ashamed to admit that I even used to listen to that brutal emo pop punk garbage too, but it was back in 1999 and therefore seems more acceptable. Actually, it was surprising to discover that type of music still was being pumped out. I'm sure that if I tossed in one of my old Eve 6 CDs and told people it was a new indie band, they'd probably think it sounded really "fresh" and "real" or something.
I want to believe that all of those poor disillusioned girls will go off to university and discover real music and stop hanging out in 24 hour breakfast joints and date boys who shower and join feminist slam poetry collectives*, but I know better.
At least a few of them will make it out of Mississauga. And just when they think they've escaped it all, they'll be doing an internship at a national newspaper and will find themselves right smack dab in the middle of their adolescence.
*For the record, I have never been a member of a feminist slam poetry collective.
