Bill O’Reilly discovers Super Mario in 1988

This clip is totally great for about 25 reasons that die-hard Super Mario fans would have more fun explaining than me.

Puzzling: the never ending question, “Why is his name Mario?”

“That’s just his name!”

Amazing! I think the “Fun Club” President is my favourite, although I love the idea of full-time Super Mario telephone counsellors.

Also, I’m pretty sure his name is Mario Mario.

Johnnie is correct; their names (being the Mario Brothers) have since been officially stated to Mario Mario and Luigi Mario. I believe the first mention of this was in the superb film version starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo as the brothers, with Dennis Hopper as Bowser.

I could sit here for hours and merrily nerd out about the finer points of this video’s awesomeness, but I will settle for these key details:

1. Those kids fucking suck at Super Mario. Seriously, kids. If you’re going to grab the Starman, get moving and do not jump over the enemies in your way. This is unwise.

2. At 2:46, they are clearly playing Super Mario Bros. 2, which is my personal favourite of the NES Mario games. It released in October of 1988, so it might have been out when this was taped- but if so, why would they have featured the older game? I am puzzled!

3. Ron Leingang’s hair makes my heart go pitter-patter.
