New York Trip: Brooklyn

Remember when I went to New York two weeks ago and was posting photos and observations from the trip? Yeah, I lost some steam and forgot to finish my last post. Here it is!
Brooklyn! I loved Brooklyn. Everything about Brooklyn felt like home. Even Williamsburg, which I assumed would be filled to the brim with über-hipsters and therefore loathsome, was lovely. Don’t get me wrong: it was filled to the brim with über-hipsters, but they were really nice, chilled-out über-hipsters. I feel like Toronto über-hipsters are too busy trying to prove their über-hipsterdom because they’re not living in Williamsburg. Also, Brooklyn Lager is better than Amsterdam Blonde.
While in Williamsburg, we visited Jack Pelican Presents gallery at the recommendation of Gabby, whose friend Sholem Krishtalka had a show called An Opera for Drella. Drella was Andy Warhol’s nickname: Dracula + Cinderella. Krishtalka’s paintings take gossipy tidbits from outside of the Warhol biographical canon—for instance, Andy being rejected socially by Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg (who were a couple at the time)—and spins them into a historical fiction that is delightfully juicy.
Also at Jack Pelican Presents: Equus Maximus by Gregory de la Haba. As the website puts it, “Over-the-top doesn’t quite capture the incredible vulgarity of it all.” Holy shit, no kidding: it will haunt my dreams forever. Mission accomplished.
Then we ate some highly-yoghurty frozen yoghurt at /ecks/ and bought some “vintage” clothing at Buffalo Exchange across the street. Further around a corner somewhere we found Peach Frog, a store that sells heavily-discounted name brand clothing. Pete bought a Penguin jacket for, like, $35.
Just to the south and on the other side of the spectrum of white privilege is Park Slope, which is famous for its brownstones and yuppies. Bah, it was so nice! I want to move to Park Slope and become an art history professor and wear linen skirts and give birth to attractive twin girls and eat organic and be active in the community. We spent the late afternoon relaxing under a cherry tree at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens in Prospect Park and ate a good dinner at Santa Fe Grill. I had a couple of well-deserved frozen margaritas, and we headed back to Williamsburg to drink microbrews at Mugs Ale House.
Photos under the cut!

Pete planted a Tamari almond in the soil so it would grow into a beautiful almond tree!

I’m so glad you made it to Sholem’s show! Exciting! I missed it but have been living vicariously through friends’ photos of the opening.
I also love Brooklyn, Park Slope the most and Williamsburg second best. Why are the hipsters there so much more relaxed?
