Cut curvy girls some slack!

2009_06_18plus

My body is none of your business, but I’m going to go ahead and say it: I teeter on the edge of “plus size”. A size 12 will fit me about 50% of the time: just small enough that I can still shop in “regular” stores, but just big enough that I face regular disappointment in the change room.

The last time I was a size 8 was after the six-weeks I spent in Jordan being an intrepid archaeologist. Oh, how fit I looked after a month and a half of back-breaking labour, sweating over handpicks and shovels in the desert, eating the same bland rice and chicken every day. That stomach parasite I picked up from eating salads washed in unfiltered water really did wonders for my waistline.

Yeah, fuck that.

I don’t consider clothing not fitting me my problem. I like my body. If properly attired, it can look super hot. If you, as a major fashion retailer, can’t come up with something to fit my body, you are failing at your job. Which is your loss, because I’m addicted to shopping and you could probably use the revenue. The fact of the matter is that designing clothing for skinny bodies is easier than designing for curvy bodies because it requires less conceptualization and detail work, ie. less talent, less manpower, less stitching. And draped jersey is cheap cheap cheap!

There was an article in the New York Times today about stores like Forever 21 and Target launching plus size lines aimed at young women who don’t want to wear tracksuits. Imagine that! I checked the Forever 21 line—Faith 21—out online, and behold:

What a bunch of fatties! Uhh, these women look normal and totally cute. If you’re not designing clothing for people who look like this, who are you designing for?

I’m not even calling out high-fashion design houses, I’m calling out mall stores. I’m also calling out mall stores that think they’re above being a mall store, like French Connection. How dumb are you? According the the NYT article, plus size clothes targeted to women 13-34 was a $5.8 billion industry last year, and that was during a recession. It’s insulting AND bad business.

In conclusion, can somebody please make me some pants that look good? Thanks.

Thanks for this post! Excellently put, Karen. I struggle with the same things, though I am quite a bit bigger than you are. It’s so ironic that as the population – ahem – gets bigger, there are fewer options out there for bigger people. It pisses me off no end. I have no problem finding pants, but I have a hell of a time finding cute tops, especially in the summertime. I’m very low budget with my clothing, and shop a lot at Wal Mart, but even I would spend the money if I could find something decent out there that fit properly and looked flattering.

You can’t see me. But know that I’m clapping.

Yesterday in Club Monaco I actually wondered if I should get liposuction so I can fit into their jeans, which are adorable but made exclusively for women with no hips.
Or calves. Or thighs. Or, anything, really.
No legs.

Oh Morgan, you are pushing size 6 max, but I love you.

You’re probably a cow by L.A. standards!

Dude. I have been saying this for yeeeeaaaaars. thanks for the post! So many issues I have w/ finding dresses and cute things. SO MANY.

On that note, we should go shopping sometime soon.

Yea, in LA, I am clinically obese. I am scary obese. I am stop-in-traffic-and-look-at-that-cow obese.

But size, shmize; the fact is that even though I’m smaller, I still have a BODY. Where are the clothes for bodies at?

Holler at me if you find ‘em.

Clothes for Bodies! I love it!

We should start a national campaign! Nay, make that INTERNATIONAL.

Amen sister. I am a 14, also just on the cusp. I have a life long love affair with the Gap, because they are the one mall store that tends to always stock up to 16. I have always particularly struggled with the war on boobs that the fashion industry seems intent on.

What’s funny is that men have no concept of what “skinny” and “fat” translate into in real life terms for women. My boyfriend can’t understand why someone all normal sized like me can’t shop wherever I want and is often so encouraging I get tricked into things like trying on cheap summer pants at Bluenotes (who cruelly don’t even put mirrors in their changerooms, FYI).

[...] this post is highly un-timely after those “Shut up, I’m curvy: now clothe me!” and “Stop eating high-fructose corn syrup!” [...]

I have been missing the ability to shop at Forever 21 (since I am now in my 30s, I really need to rethink this) ever since I shot past their max size (mumblemumble) years ago. So this is good news but I am with you – what is plus size about those ladies?

The only place I buy jeans anymore is Ebay. What does that say??

Two frreaking thumbs up, yo. I was up at size 20 a while ago, and now I’m a 16 with regular dips into 18-ville. It’s why I love shopping in the states so much – THEIR mall stores have plenty of clothes in bigger sizes, and according to Macy’s, I’m always a 14. It’s a great feeling.

The caveat is that when I do head down yonder, I always buy too much because I’m so giddy that things actually FIT and that I have a selection of nice, flattering, stylish clothes to choose from. IMAGINE THAT!

I blame Montreal!!!

There is a new brand of jeans that are absolutely fabulous for curvy shaped women of all sizes. The brand is Little in the Middle, and this jeans line caters to all sizes of women that have a curvy shape. One of the most interesting thing that it does; is that it is sized one size smaller in the waist than in the hips, so it eliminates that awful gap in the back of your jeans that let your rear end hang out while seated while offering a great fit. I think that this would be a great addition to your listing of jeans brands for future articles.
