Four Hours in Detroit

On the weekend, me and Pete took his little brother to his first Blue Jays game. But not in Toronto, in Detroit where they were playing a four-game series with the Tigers. Have you ever been in Detroit? It’s CRAAAAAAZY. Like, abandoned skyscrapers crazy.
Only a narrow stretch of river separates Windsor from Detroit, but you can feel the cultural divide as soon as you cross that bridge/tunnel from Canada to America. I have fairly limited travel experience in the United States, and I don’t think New York City is really a great indicator of what the rest of America is like, so I was pretty shocked to see that these Americans were noticeably fatter than Canadians. And people had accents! Just like the stereotype!
Best thing I saw while I was there? The runner up is the whole group of Tigers fans who were double-fisting beer and frozen daiquiris. A Bud Light in one hand an a lime daiquiri in the other is the American Dream. The winner is the tough-looking guy who had a Keith Haring tattoo on his shoulder surrounded by a tribal design. I doubt he had any idea that the artist was a gay icon and AIDS activist. Ha ha!

After a day spent in and near Flint, MI (yes, the town that brought you Michael Moore), I’ll vouch for this. Another delight: ludicrous right-wing bumper stickers.
