Happy Canada Day (or, Self-Important Urbanite Hatred For Street Festivals)

Happy Canada Day (not Spain winning the EuroCup, as pictured above)!

While millions will leave their houses in search of free concerts, tiny flags, and fireworks today, I will be staying in. Probably folding laundry and making bread. Trying to ignore the revelry around me.

Like most self-important urbanites, I utterly loathe street festivals. After six years of living in the downtown core, I am so over street festivals that I will do anything in my power to stay out of their way. Why should I have to give up my city to hoards of 905ers on weekends and holidays? They clog up my transit, they fill up my favourite restaurants, they barricade the sidewalks with their slow walking...they're a public nuisance!

Sometimes it seems like every day of the summer has some kind of festivity for me to ignore. Between the 2008 Euro Cup, Pride, Taste of Little Italy, Taste of the Danforth, the Cabbagetown Festival, Summerlicious, Yonge and Dundas Square events, Luminat'eau, etc. I'm taking a lot of side streets to get around town. It's not like I hate people who aren't Torontonians, I just don't like big crowds and overpriced corn on the cob.

You may be content to pay $4 for that corn and eat it next to some hairy shirtless man in the blazing sun, but I am not, sir!

Summer Job Update

I haven't been posting much in the last few weeks because I started a new job in arts administration, the sexiest of all hipster occupations (after, maybe, producer at CBC Radio 3 or professional cycling advocate). It's at the Ontario Crafts Council, near Queen and Ossington. I write grants and promotional copy.

The job is totally rad, but an added bonus is all the local food spots. Café Bernate has the most delicious sandwiches known to man. T.A.N. Coffee serves up a mean fair-trade brew and manager Marilyn bakes organic fruit muffins that make the A.M. worthwhile. And all the hype around Golden Turtle pho is well-deserved.

I'm kind of bummed that soon, I'll have to take 3 weeks off to do my internship at the National Post. Which is kind of ironic, actually: on the one hand, I'm working at a non-profit arts organization that supports independent craftspeople; on the other, I'm working for a newspaper that supports the Conservative government. But I'll be working in the arts and life department, I swear!

Perhaps their right- and left-wingness cancel each other out?

Where were you when they discovered ice on Mars?

Huzzah! From NASA:

Dice-size crumbs of bright material have vanished from inside a trench where they were photographed by NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander four days ago, convincing scientists that the material was frozen water that vaporized after digging exposed it.

"It must be ice," said Phoenix Principal Investigator Peter Smith of the University of Arizona, Tucson. "These little clumps completely disappearing over the course of a few days, that is perfect evidence that it's ice. There had been some question whether the bright material was salt. Salt can't do that."

Pete and I heard about this spacetastic development while we were in the middle of watching Planet of the Apes, which seems like an odd coincidence (despite the fact that *spoiler alert* it was Earth all along). I was also in the middle of knitting a tea cosy, but that seems to be completely non-coincidental. We exchanged a quick high five and are now about to crack open a bottle of Maudite to celebrate.

I feel like the scene I have presented for you reveals a lot about our relationship. We share a healthy respect for space, Charlton Heston, hot tea, high fives, and Québécois microbrews.

Believe it or not, this is the first time I stood on Parliament Hill*. Though I've been to Wat Pho four times, the Great Wall three times, and the Jungfrau twice, I have never been to our nation's capital. It's a little embarrassing.

I was in Ottawa for my cousin Bill's wedding (which was lovely), and although I did not manage to get any good photos of the ceremony or reception, I got a few fun tourist shots. Check 'em out behind the cut.

Rainn Wilson: Hot or Not?

It's so easy to love Dwight Schrute. Usually it's not in a "Hey, I'd marry Dwight Schrute" kind of way, because nobody in their right mind would want to move in with Mose and Dwight in their Pennsylvania Deutsch, Nazi war criminal grandparents' beet farm. As one external Office character who slips my mind once said, Dwight looks like a "man baby."

However, slap a beard on Rainn Wilson, and he is lookin' real good. Reeeeeeaal Good. I'd like to see what they'd do with him in some kind of arty, GQ-style photo shoot. If I still had a locker, the hypothetical Rainn Wilson GQ photos would defs get a good spot on the inside of the door, right by the 4x6 magnetic mirror.

Free Download Alert: Sigur Rós' "Gobbledigook"

I'd like to start off by saying that Sigur Rós is one of the best bands ever. Their show at Massey Hall was the only concert I've ever gone to by myself, and it was hands down the most incredible live performance I've been witness to. In fact, I think seeing them alone is almost preferable, because then you don't have to turn to the person beside you after every song and say, "Shit, that was soooo good." Of course it's good. It's ethereal Icelandic orchestral pop. Stop talking.

Then again, if you're not into that kind of thing, you're not into that kind of thing. However, "Gobbledigook" is the closest thing to a radio single that Sigur Rós has ever recorded, and it's pretty catchy, so you might like it. The band is offering a free download here on their website to hype the release of their new album, Með Suð Í Eyrum Við Spilum (With a Buzz in Our Ears We Play Endlessly), on June 23.

Also, if you're into naked camping trips (and I emphasize trips), check out the "Gobbledigook" music video. After taking several screencaps from the video for this post, I couldn't bring myself to scrap the leftovers—there really is nothing like a naked man on a swing.
Creepiest Moment in This Month's Issue of Fashion

Flip to p.108, where Fashion talks to "a few of the city's coolest men about what they find truly alluring in a woman."

Fashion asks their round table of investor/new media-types who they would rather go out on a date with: Elisha Cuthbert, Belinda Stronach, Perdita Felicien, Estella Warren, or Alanis Morisette. Jeremy*, age 37, says, "Elisha Cuthbert. I've had a thing for her since she was on Popular Mechanics for Kids." Ewwwwwwwwww.

Okay, so I looked into it, and Elisha Cuthbert was not 13-years-old when she starred on PMK like I first though, but was 15 when the show started and 18 when it ended. Which isn't quite as gross, I suppose. However, at one point, Jeremy would have been 26-year-old lusting after a 15-year-old. I'm not really sure that "one of the city's coolest men" would admit that.

Think about it...

I created this graphic for a Torontoist post I did today about the Scott Pilgrim movie. Basically, I inserted Mary Elizabeth Winstead into the SP4 cover scheme, as she will be playing Ramona Flowers, and I needed something to go with the cutesy real life actor/character mash up I did for a previous post.

I'm posting this because a) I am very proud of my Adobe Illustrator prowess in making this happen, since I haven't done much Illustrator work since last summer, and b) I would like to emphasize that this took me only about 45 minutes to an hour to complete. Last weekend, Pete and I had a weekend getaway/family engagement in Almonte, Ontario. With me being a die-hard Torontonian who obviously thinks everything to do with Ottawa and its surrounding areas is lame, I wasn't expecting much. However, I was completely romanced by the natural beauty of Lanark County and its charming historic mill towns.

Fun Fact: Lanark County is the maple syrup capital of Ontario.

Additional Fun Fact: According to Wikipedia, Almonte (population 4,648) has exactly 60 visible ethnic minorities living in town, 15 of which are "Back."

How was your weekend? I spent my Friday evening as an artist's assistant at the CONTACT launch party. Nestled into the back corner of Brassaii, fellow Torontoist staffer John Beebe began his first of five appearances around the city in a mobile portrait studio/photo finishing centre/gallery. Check out John's website throughout the month as he uploads the portraits to his online gallery.

I had such a blast talking to dozens of party-goers, changing printer cartridges, and trying not to fall off an unsteady stool while hanging the portraits. Working at trendy launch parties is so much more fun than being a guest, posing awkwardly for people you'll never see again. The not paying for your drinks thing is also fun. I suddenly understand why people go into PR and events management.

Yeah, at first I was like, "Where are animated typefaces and the goodtimes?" but after about a minute in, I was mesmerized. I'm still mostly at a loss for words, so I'll leave the explanation up to Vaneska at Bif! Bam! Pow! Zap!

...the video is a flashback and commentary on the outburst of riots by French suburban youth in the fall of 2005. The riots were initially triggered by the accidentally deaths of two teenagers from a poor commune in the Eastern suburbs of France when they were chased by police and hid in an electrical power station where they were electrocuted. Over the course of three months, the unrest spread to 274 cities in France, with 2,888 arrests, 8,973 cars damaged, 1 death, and 126 police and firefighters injured. Damage was estimated at 200 million euros.

Ndeur told me that the significance of the camera crew in the video for "Stress" is the influence the French and international media had in sensationalizing and thus further triggering the youth riots. The lack of white racial representation of the delinquents in the video likely refers to international media coverage of the riots as acts of violence by the French Muslim youth, despite the fact that it was determined by the French Intelligence that there was no Islamic factor in the riots.
